Makeup 101: A Complete Guide for Beginners

Hi everyone, this is my first blog post. My name is Manda, and in this first post, I want to help you by recommending make-up tools, tips on how to avoid common mistakes, and finally, a make-up tutorial for beginners. If you’re learning to apply make-up, you should practise at home and ask for feedback from others, so that you can learn more quickly. Feedback from others is really important for improving on flaws we might not realise we have and for personal development. I hope you like it!!!

What tools do you actually need for make-up as a beginner?

Here are the make-up tools you need to have:

  1. Blending tools

To apply foundation, of course, we need a tool to ensure our complexion looks even and smooth; although we can apply it using just our fingers, that’s not very effective. The tools you’ll need are a beauty blender, a puff, or you can also use a brush. However, using a brush usually leaves streaks, so after using a brush, you’ll need to gently tap the area again with a beauty blender or puff.

  1. Blushing tools

To apply blush, you can use your fingers, or if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, you can use a tool such as a brush or a puff. Remember, never use the same tool for blending foundation and blending blush.

  1. Eyelash curler

To get curled eyelashes, you’ll need this tool. Use it carefully so you don’t pinch your eyelids.

  1. Good mirror and lighting

A fairly large mirror and good lighting are your best friends. Good lighting determines whether your make-up looks natural or not, because if you apply make-up under dim lighting, you’ll always feel like, ‘Hmm, this doesn’t quite look right, this doesn’t quite look right,’ and end up with make-up that looks unnatural.

Quick tips to avoid common mistakes

  1. Always match your foundation shade to your neck, not your hand. Your hand is usually a different shade to your face.

  2. Blend, blend, blend. Blend evenly and gently. Use circular motions and don’t just blend down to the jawline – blend all the way down to your neck to avoid a patchy finish.

  3. Less is more. Apply the product a little at a time; if you apply too much at once, it will be difficult to remove.

  4. Clean your tools regularly. A dirty brush can cause breakouts on your face.

  5. Don’t skip skincare. Make-up sits best on a well-prepared canvas.

Simple steps make up for a beginner

  1. Prep your skin

Always start with the right skincare routine to keep your skin feeling moisturised. Well-hydrated skin is the key to flawless make-up, you know. If you want to apply makeup in the morning, it’s best to prepare your face the night before, so that when morning comes, you can start applying makeup straight away (this tip only applies to dry skin). If you have oily or combination skin, you should still wash your face with soap in the morning and then apply your skincare products. Remember not to use too much skincare; use just enough so that when you apply foundation, your complexion doesn’t look cakey.

  1. Apply a light foundation or skin tint

Let’s start with a lightweight foundation, such as a cushion or skin tint. If you’ve applied skincare beforehand, it’s best to wait a few minutes before applying the foundation, so that your skincare can be fully absorbed. Try to apply it evenly, and use any leftover foundation on your nose, smile lines and under-eye area to prevent it from cracking.

  1. Set your makeup

Set your make-up with a translucent powder or a tinted powder that matches your skin tone. Then spray on a setting spray to set your makeup.

  1. Add a soft blush

Use powder blush; if you want to use liquid blush, you should apply it before setting your makeup with powder. When applying blush, you can do so according to the shape of your face. Also, choose a shade that suits your skin tone. I recommend peach or rosy shades to give your face a healthy and fresh look.

  1. curly eyelashes

Use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes. Then apply the mascara gently. Here’s a tip: hold a mirror at waist height, look into it, and apply the mascara gently so it doesn’t smudge onto your eyelids.

  1. Define your brows lightly

If you think your eyebrows are already quite thick, it’s best to just tidy them up, or you could use brow mascara. But if you feel your eyebrows aren’t thick enough or aren’t neat enough, you can fill in the sparse areas—use a brown eyebrow pencil, not black, or you’ll end up looking like Shin-chan. Fill in the sparse areas gradually, and remember not to make them too thick.

  1. Finish with a lip tint or gloss

Finally, apply whatever lip tint, lipstick or lip gloss you have. Remember, if you’re a beginner, avoid red or magenta pink. Stick to neutral and natural shades, such as nude, beige, peach, coral, rosy pink and mauve. And there you go—you’re done!!!
